The Lovers Traits
After the card of The Hierophant comes the card of The Lovers. This card symbolises the love and relationship between a man and a woman. As is shown on the card, there is an angel on a cloud above the two who is blessing them, and this symbolically means that the relationship between the man and woman is blessed by those from the kingdom of Heaven. In this article, we look thoroughly at The Lovers Traits.
This card depicts not only the love and relationship with each other but also symbolises that the man is only half as effective without the woman. On his path, The Fool needs his mirror half, the female, who gives him additional power and love to fight and win on his road to enlightenment. The angel above the two lovers is separating them, which also symbolises that this card is about keeping you apart from the love you seek until you find not just anyone, but the one who will be right for you.
Notice that the man and woman are on the earth and the angel who is blessing them is looking from the sky. This simply means that everyone on the earth needs to find his or her soul mate in order to have a full and outstanding life. If a man wants to achieve everything in his life, then he probably has to find the woman who will lead and encourage him, on his path to enlightenment. This card is associated with love and reunion, with relationships, and in fact, it does not matter who you are. You must find your soul mate, because you can’t live your full life without her. Simply search for your mirror half and you will find her. Maybe you feel that you are better off alone, but this card and the whole major arcana say that you can’t achieve higher goals without the presence of your mirror half. This card is telling you that you are half without her, so you have to search and find her.
After meeting with The Hierophant, The Fool is ready for his journey and he is ready to achieve everything. At the fruit tree, he finds a woman standing in front of him. This means that The Fool meets with his other half, but it is not accidental. This happened for some reason. The reason of course is that The Fool will go the long path and he needs someone who will encourage. Without love and encouragement, he can’t achieve his goals. This card simply means that if you want to achieve something great you have search for the one who will help you fulfill your purpose. Without someone who will encourage and fill you with love and happiness, you can’t stand for something great.
Notice that the man is looking towards the woman. He looks to her for spiritual completeness, because women are automatically connected to their spiritual selves. She looks to the angel and towards heaven for her guidance and assurance. Men are outgoing and active in the world, whereas women are quieter and more passive in the world. This sets up a natural connection with the God-force for women, therefore if a man wants to sped up his access to his own connection with the God-force, he needs to connect with a woman who will teach him how to have that in his life.
When they do lock eyes with each other, the couple communicates with each other through their eyes. They are so deeply full of love that they don’t need any words because by looking into each other’s eyes they can say everything that they want to say. In fact, the eyes are the windows of our souls, so the eyes in this case symbolise that the two have opened their souls because they love each other so deeply. This eye connection is all about subtle communication and expression which if The Lovers card falls in your reading means that you should find someone who connects with you so well that they will understand you without words.
In the Rider Waite variations of the Tarot deck, the tree behind the man has the flower “lily” growing from its branches. The lily is always associated with purity and fertility, so these two partners allow each other to be real. They don’t need to pretend to be someone. They love each other because they are real and not pretending. The lily is also linked with freedom, which indicates that within a relationship with our mirror half we give ourselves and our lover freedom. Everyone needs the freedom to show you his or her real self.
And the last key of the card is the lovers’ nudity. This simply means that the two don’t have anything to hide from each other. In fact, nudity is the ultimate form of expression that they are not hiding anything. After the clothes are off, you are free and you have not left anything to hide from your mirror half – the lovers love each other so much that they don’t hide anything from each other. Their nudity also means that their love and trust is shared with each other.
When this card appears this may confuse you in some ways. For example you should firmly associate this card with love. Of course if you feel love and trust with someone and you are afraid to tell your beloved how you feel, then you should go ahead and tell her or him about your feelings. But if you don’t have any feelings for someone then this card simply means that you need someone who will encourage and fill you with love and friendship during the hard times. Search for a friend or partner who will be with you forever, and she or he will encourage you no matter what the circumstance will be.
Maybe you have problems in your work or you have to make a very hard decision, then this card means that you should not only ask your inner voice what to do, but you should also go ahead and ask a friend, someone who really cares about you. Afterward, analyse your friend’s advice and make the right choice. The main thing is that you should not hurry. Just relax and ask – your friends, your lovers, or someone who truly loves you and cares about you – what to do, how to act, how to decide. Then summarise the advice you receive and lastly follow the one that feels right.
As was stated above, The Fool after meeting with The Hierophant encounters his mirror half, his female reflection. If this card appears in your reading, then you are in the same situation. The Fool is already full of belief but he needs someone who will encourage him and walk alongside him. So you need someone who will encourage you and who is going to be with you, no matter what the circumstance will be.
Furthermore…..
The Lovers card is one of the most complex cards in the Major arcana and represents love and alchemy. It can represent either the creative force of love, or the destructive force of uncontrolled passion. It also represents saying goodbye to a former way of life and welcoming full acceptance of uncompromising love. The number for the Lovers card is 6 and it symbolises a variety of combinations of contrasts.
This card may not necessarily represent the love between a couple either. It could also represent the love of a passion of yours such as painting, dancing, riding horses, or writing music or stories.
The dark side of this card is seen when people suppress their deepest desires and keep hidden what they really want out of life or who they really want to be. For example, if someone is suppressing their desire or inclination to love someone else of the same sex for fear of what their parents or those in their community might say, then they are suppressing their own happiness. They are suppressing being true to themselves. When the Lovers card appears in your life, you are being asked to be honest to yourself and allow yourself to fulfil a wish or desire that you have been suppressing, and stand by your decision to do so with those around you who would otherwise object.
The Lovers card could also be urging you to settle a dispute with diplomacy rather than confrontation. “Make love, not war” could be the message for you from this card today.
The drive behind The Lovers card is: devotion to a cause or lover, melting into one another, and being one with love.
The Light side of The Lovers card is: admitting what you truly want to yourself and others, having trust, and having optimism.
The Shadow side of The Lovers card is: repressing or suppressing yourself, not being true to yourself, and feeling displaced in the world.

Here’s a site where you’ll find my writings.
The Bravehearts of Belgrave High is now published. I have completed the first in a series of novels that I wrote for teens. It is the courageous story of a young girl growing up in a home filled with domestic violence. She also has to endure a school and neighbourhood full of bullies. We read how she maneuvres her way through such a difficult situation. Plus, how she grows because of it, among other themes in the novel.
The desired outcome for young readers is that they will be inspired to treasure their unique differences. If they don’t fit in with the system or with those around them, then they should realise that it’s quite okay not to fit in.
My first novel was written to help raise funds for the private foundation that I established, which might later become a charity. Click here if you’d like to be taken to the site where you can purchase this novel. If you cannot see the site, use a browser other than Chrome.
