Understanding a Tarot Deck
To understand a tarot deck you’ll need to become acquainted with the various suits and cards that culminate to form a deck. Each full deck is comprised of 78 cards and are divided into three main categories:
The Major Arcana consists of the first 22 cards of the Tarot deck. These 22 cards are also referred to as Trumps, Triumphs, Majors, or Keys. The Major cards can bring forth information about your situation without needing the backup of the minors. However, a more encompassing and comprehensive reading can be achieved by using both the major and the minor deck. Minors support the Majors in getting the message across. Therefore it is important to know the meaning of both if you would like to become a reader.
The Minor Arcana accounts for 56 minor cards that follow the first 22 Major Arcana cards. These 56 minor Arcana cards area also called pips, suit cards, or minors. The word Arcana is the plural version of the word Arcanum, and means “secret”.
Court cards within the Minor Arcana are the court players within the suit: Kings, Queens, Knights, and Pages. They are referred to as “face cards” in a regular playing deck.
The Suits
We delve a little deeper in understanding a tarot card deck by further breaking down the Minor Arcana into four sections called suits. The four suits are:
- Wands (or Rods)
- Cups (or Chalices)
- Swords
- Pentacles (or Discs)
Each of the four suits in the Minor Arcana is structured much like a regular playing card deck with 14 cards in each suit. Cards in each suit flow in order as follows:
- Aces
- Number cards (2 to 10)
- Page
- Knight
- Queen
- King
Infinitely numerous meanings can come from similar spreads of the tarot cards. The cards are just a vehicle to help the reader tap into the situation. The symbols on the cards cause certain perceptions to arise within the reader at the time of the reading. They also have their own unique meaning which adds to the reading if and when mentioned.
Essentially this is the basis of understanding the Tarot card readings. Full understanding comes when you commit to studying the esoteric meaning of the cards and the symbols included on them.

Here’s a site where you’ll find my writings.
The Bravehearts of Belgrave High is now published. I have completed the first in a series of novels that I wrote for teens. It is the courageous story of a young girl growing up in a home filled with domestic violence. She also has to endure a school and neighbourhood full of bullies. We read how she maneuvres her way through such a difficult situation. Plus, how she grows because of it, among other themes in the novel.
The desired outcome for young readers is that they will be inspired to treasure their unique differences. If they don’t fit in with the system or with those around them, then they should realise that it’s quite okay not to fit in.
My first novel was written to help raise funds for the private foundation that I established, which might later become a charity. Click here if you’d like to be taken to the site where you can purchase this novel. If you cannot see the site, use a browser other than Chrome.
