The Lovers Card Emerald Tolemac
The themes of The Lovers Card Emerald Tolemac are trial and choice, relation and communion. The number of this card is six, which symbolises adjustment in thought and attitude. Six is the number of truth, order, justice, economy, harmony and balance. It gives people the opportunity to develop a clear idea of right and wrong and to experience the consequences of their choices – cause and effect. Whenever a six card appears, you will find that life is presenting you with opportunities to learn your responsibilities, and to be of service to humanity.
There are six sides to a cube, a manifestation of taking up space in the material world. Yet when the cube is opened out it becomes a cross. The cross can either symbolise Christ Consciousness or it can represent the burden of carrying a cross. The result is always dependent upon your previous choices in life.
Overall, the Lovers Card Emerald Tolemac is full of opposites, as demonstrated by the symbols on the card. The figures of King Arthur and his wife Queen Guinevere are standing beneath the apple tree in the foreground, wearing their crowns. Their souls are reaching towards heaven while their hearts, minds, and bodies are completely consumed with one another, ignoring all that is going on around them. They are kissing, renewing and maintaining their emotional bond. Yet their bond is constantly under threat of being torn apart, symbolised by the fact that they are standing beneath an apple tree – one that has a green tree snake hanging from it. The snake reminds us of the Serpent in the Garden of Eden.
The Serpent is Satan. Satan is in charge of chaos, destruction, and death, and he lies to people about which path will make them happiest. In choosing the wrong path, humans get the chance to realise that they didn’t choose the road to happiness. When they have drenched themself in so evil much that they can’t stand it any longer, they either turn back to goodness or they eliminate themselves altogether from this dimension somehow.
The Serpent represents the temptation to fall to the dark due to the deviousness of Goddess Kali, as Goddess Kali is the power behind the demonic. Coiled in the tree above the Lovers, her evil eye is watching them, waiting for the first opportunity to create destruction in their relationship. While this is very true of what goes on, once again there is duality even in this symbol itself.
The Serpent also symbolises the primordial life force of people, which rises up the spine and out through the Crown Chakra when it becomes active.

Anyone seeking to understand their inner transmutation must work with this inner fire that opens the magical world of infinite possibilities. He who wants to enter the inner magical cave must first find the sealed doors within. The ever-burning lamp of the alchemist (you) carries the seeking initiate in his wandering. When these seven lamps are lit up in the body, one is invited to witness their own mystery, becoming a luminous channel for the miraculous. This is the ultimate goal for which we – the seekers of truth, love and wisdom – must labour.
King Arthur balances the sword that he pulled out of the rock as he kisses Queen Guinevere. The sword has dual meanings, one of which symbolises the Pentecostal fire, the igneous serpent of our own hidden potent magical fire coiled up in potential at the base of the spine. With this igneous sword, you – as a seeker of self within – become the king and priest over earth (physical), water (emotions), air (intellectual), and fire (spiritual). With this sword, you will have renewed your mind.
The secrets of all lie within you – the Kingdom of Heaven is within. These secrets are eternally waiting to carry you to the absolute whole within. All human beings are called to gather the keys to the mysteries and gain wisdom that can only be experienced in an individual manner.
A reader of this card could interpret the Serpent to mean renewal and regeneration, due to the fact that snakes shed their skin. If the reader sees this in the card, his or her querent is being reminded to look for the opportunity for renewal, because the querent can gain strength for relationships by overcoming the obstacles on their path.
Both good and evil are represented by the fruit tree, reinforcing the many aspects of duality seen here. The tree is an apple tree that is producing ripe apples, thus producing good fruit. Matthew 7: 16 says “You shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?” What are you manifesting in your world? How are the manifestations of your thoughts and actions impacting those around you in the world?
The opposite viewpoint is the fact that it’s an apple tree, like the tree in the Garden of Eden. In Genesis 2: 16 – 17 it says “And the LORD God commanded the man, You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.” Even though Celtic legend says that apples are symbolic of the Celestial dimensions, there is much more to the apples on this card than just that meaning alone.
Note that there are five apples in the tree. The fact that there are five is representative of our five senses. Apples in this case symbolise our earthly pleasures, which we can be manipulated because of if we don’t enjoy these things in moderation at all times.
On the journey towards the Holy Grail within us, we’re constantly faced with temptations, distractions, and obstacles. In the distance behind the Lovers stands one of the threats to their bond, King Arthur’s Knight Sir Lancelot. Queen Guinevere, because of her inability to be happy in her own company, fell to the intense attraction that she had for Sir Lancelot. While her husband was away, the two fell madly in love, filling Guinevere’s deep need for companionship and closeness that King Arthur wasn’t fulfilling in her.
We see Sir Lancelot leaning on his sword while standing not far from a burning tree, watching the lovers with jealousy and envy. His attention is focused on that relation, rather than the spiritual guidance of the burning tree so close to him. This is the age-old pull between divine guidance and worldly pleasure.
This type of situation is placed before us by the evil that exists in our 3D world and in the dimensions that hover close-by in the astral worlds. Kali, Shiva, Satan, the Devil, or whatever you want to call it, will place such obstacles on our path. The question is, will we turn towards the Light and become good, or will we fall to the dark like so many do and have done throughout the ages? Our quest is to go beyond the temptations, distractions and obstacles that are presented to us. Our quest is to become strong and pure, emitting more Light than dark if we want to pass through to a higher dimension. We’re here to become Custodians of the Light and to shine that light so brightly that it heals everyone who passes through our lives.
The duality of the good and evil of which we are all capable is seen all throughout this card. At this point in the Major Arcana journey, we still haven’t learned to control our urges or our needs. This is where most Grail seekers often veer off the Path of the Hero and fall to the dark. Ultimately however (if we’re committed to finishing the Hero’s Journey), this conflict is reconciled, because no-one can know how to do or be good without first knowing what it is to do and be evil. Once we’ve had enough of living a life that is distant from the warmth of goodness, we’re ready to make our way back into the arms of God. One interpretation of the mountain in the distance is that it symbolises the effort required on the journey to enlightenment. Luckily, there are beacons along the path to light our way.
Let’s take another look at the sword that The Lovers are holding. Another meaning of the sword is that it can be used to separate, creating spiritual and intellectual discernment. Discernment increases in accuracy as one increases their spiritual comprehension and intellectual knowledge. Both King Arthur and Queen Guinevere are touching the sword, which indicates that they are both on a quest for the Holy Grail within.
One must remember that swords can be used to assist and destroy. The sharp edge can help cut down the foods that we need from the trees and from vines. Or the skins that we need to cut in order to turn them to leather to make our tents and clothes. If one wields a sword of light, love can be used to assist in the daily process of life, or it can be used to disable darkness. On the other hand, one can use the sharp edge of the sword to strike at those who harm us. Sometimes it is necessary to use the side that cuts in order to restore balance to a situation that is out of control. But in this card here we see that although both Lovers are touching the sword, they are entwined with one another other and aren’t using it. The power is there but is guarding the situation without needing to be exerted.
The sword is also a phallic symbol, as is the snake and the mountain.
Let us look at the tree in the background which is on fire. The fire burning in the tree is bright and passionate. It is holy fire, known as Vedic in the Hindu tradition that can burn away your ego denial without consuming you. It is purifying. The tree relates to the idea of the burning bush and a higher power speaking to the questioner. Do you have the wherewithal to hear this voice of guidance?
All three figures are standing by a stream, which represents divine power flowing, whilst an angel watches over them. Angels offer guidance, and this angel of healing is wearing purple. The colour relates to the third eye chakra and the principle of openness. Purple also has symbolised royalty, and in Chinese tradition, holiness. This card is ruled by the astrological sign Gemini, symbolic of both communication and duality, themes that relate to the Lovers.
Getting the Lovers Card Emerald Tolemac in a spread may mean that you will be able to transcend some difficulty that has been plaguing you. It could also foretell a lasting romantic love. It could also point to the blossoming of a durable and loving friendship. It is essential when contemplating the Lovers to be clear that you do not want to hurt anyone, including yourself. If you are experiencing uncertainty in any of your relationships, the Lovers card advises caution and balance. This card could also refer to striking a wholesome balance between your love life and work.
Overall the Lovers Card Emerald Tolemac is about how we relate to one another and how we relate to the creative principle of the universe. How do you communicate your love in your speech to others and in your prayers to deities and ancestors? How do you choose to spend your finite time? What kind of relationships do you want to build? These are the questions to ponder when you pull this card, and remember to go easy. There are divine communications and benevolent forces guiding you if you take the time to listen and notice. However, you must develop discernment so that you can know which way to go to walk the narrow path towards the Light.

The desired outcome for young readers is that they will be inspired to treasure their unique differences. If they don’t fit in with the system or with those around them, then they should realise that it’s quite okay not to fit in.
