The High Priestess Traits
The High Priestess is the card numbered two in the Major arcana of the tarot, although it is the third card due to The Fool being card number zero. The High Priestess and The Magician have the same meaning and value, because they balance each other out. As we know, the Major arcana is all about the journey of The Fool, so the first cards/characters/stages that he initially encounters on his journey are The Magician and The High Priestess. Both are very important for balancing life because no one can see the light without also seeing their shadow.
The High Priestess is associated with higher powers, the subconscious mind and mystery. She represents wisdom, great knowledge and a proper understanding of life. She is also known as a guardian of the subconscious mind. The High Priestess is a very spiritual card and is connected with femininity and the Moon. Her most distinguished feature is intuition: she relies on her intuition and inner knowledge to make almost all of her decisions.
The High Priestess is also known as Artemis, Isis and Persephone. She is a very beautiful and mysterious veiled woman who is the very opposite of The Magician, but as we mentioned previously, they have same value and importance during the Journey of the Fool because they balance each other.
As we see on the card The High Priestess is holding a scroll of arcana information tucked under her arm, and she is sitting between two pillars which simply means that she is between two choices. She is sitting between the light and the darkness, so she is the mediator between the conscious and the unconscious mind. The High Priestess is linked with subconscious mind, as the unconscious can’t be understood through everyday life. It can only be understood through symbolism and dreams.
On the black pillar we see the letter B and on the white pillar we see the letter J. These letters stand for Boaz (B) and Jachin (J), the pillars being from King Solomon’s temple. Boaz is associated as an ending of something and Jachin is means the beginning of something new. So The High Priestess is sitting between these two pillars and symbolises changing – there is a need for change. Although The High Priestess indicates to you that you need to change, she does not tell you what to do and how to make the change. Rather, she just shows you that you are between the ending and the beginning and you need to make a choice.
The High Priestess represents her magic power of intuition by her stunning beauty and subconscious mind. We can see the sphere above her head, this is the pearl of wisdom and means that the high priestess if full of wisdom and love. The cross that is illustrated above the scroll means that she learned her wisdom by discovering the best of every tradition. Simply she is keen on ancient knowledge and she knows almost every ancient secret. She understands the connection between religion, science and philosophy. The key symbols of The High Priestess are the following: Scroll, cross and the sphere above her head (on some cards the sphere is replaced by the moon).
The sphere is associated with the unconscious mind. It symbolises illumination and fertility. As we see the sphere is above her head which means that all her thoughts are illuminated by the secret power of unconscious mind. The sphere is all about unseen power, energy, force and intuition. This sphere also clears her mind, spirit and heart. As we said above the sphere is changed with the moon on type of cards, but there is no problem because both illustrates the secret powers of unconscious.
The scroll is very mysterious. In fact we all want to know what is written there however The High Priestess will not give up that information. This scroll is full of knowledge that she gained while learning esoteric and occult secrets. She is holding the scroll very close and gives the sign that she will not show it to anyone. The High Priestess knows that this scroll is full of wisdom and is a savior but at the same time this information can be very dangerous, if not used in the right way.
The Cross is a very ancient symbol, which was created a long time ago, and it has a different meaning in each various different ancient culture. In the ancient Middle East the cross is associated with four directions – north, south, west and east. In the ancient Aztecs the cross means the meeting place of God. The High Priestess is wearing the cross on her heart which to the Celts means that she is associated with nature, secret knowledge and with God.
Tarot cards and astrology are tightly connected with each other. The High Priestess is associated with the Moon. The Moon is the ruler of zodiac sign Cancer. While the planet Mercury (which is associated with the Magician) has plenty to say, The Moon and High Priestess are focused on our emotions and say nothing. The main message from The High Priestess and The Moon is that we should listen more to any non-verbal messages that we pick up or notice. The Moon is known as a ruler of emotions, so that fact deepens the connection between The High Priestess and the Moon. Emotions manifest themselves through us and change the way we live.
Now we’ll talk about what happens when The High Priestess appears during tarot reading. As we said previously The High Priestess is representative of emotions, changes and the wisdom of our inner knowledge. When this card appears in a tarot reading, it symbolises that you should pay more attention to your intuition, dreams and your inner power. The High Priestess suggests listening to your inner voice. The society around us tells that we should go for what we know, not what we feel, but when The High Priestess card appears it means that we should do the opposite of what society is telling us to do. We should pay attention to our inner power and dreams. We should listen to our intuition. Our unconscious often speaks to us by the symbols, so if you are making an important decision or change and The High Priestess card appears, it symbolises that you should listen to your own inner voice, you should be patient and your unconscious mind will show you the path. You should simply wait and you will be given a right path. Her main lesson is that everything you need to know is already within you.

Here’s a site where you’ll find my writings.
The Bravehearts of Belgrave High is now published. I have completed the first in a series of novels that I wrote for teens. It is the courageous story of a young girl growing up in a home filled with domestic violence. She also has to endure a school and neighbourhood full of bullies. We read how she maneuvres her way through such a difficult situation. Plus, how she grows because of it, among other themes in the novel.
The desired outcome for young readers is that they will be inspired to treasure their unique differences. If they don’t fit in with the system or with those around them, then they should realise that it’s quite okay not to fit in.
My first novel was written to help raise funds for the private foundation that I established, which might later become a charity. Click here if you’d like to be taken to the site where you can purchase this novel. If you cannot see the site, use a browser other than Chrome.
