Justice Card Emerald Tolemac
The Justice Card Emerald Tolemac brings awareness to the importance of balance by demonstrating that true understanding, and hence justice, is only achieved when the emotions (symbolised by water and the moon), and intellect (symbolised by the sword), are balanced.
The Lady of the Lake rules the Justice card and safeguards the ideals of truth while seeking balance between divine and human justice. She looks to Heaven for guidance and transfers the supernal power she receives to the sword, which represents the intellect. She plants the sword into the river and then gathers equal amounts of water in each basin of the scale in a very literal balancing act. Her stance on top of the river becomes, of itself, the very image of the scales of Justice.
When the Lady plants the sword of intellect into the river, which represents both emotion and the flow of life, a startled fish leaps up in response to the energy of the sword (a demonstration of the Law of Cause and Effect). Now we can see what was previously hidden; the shadow side, or maybe even a skeleton in the closet. By seeing both the light and the dark sides we know the truth, and then Justice is assured.
When considering how justice should be served, it is wise to apply the Chinese philosophy of yin/yang. This philosophy explains that throughout existence, there is a cohesive fabric of mind between the cosmos and the human realm, and it is in a constant state of flux. This flux is the process of trying to bring about a dynamic balance or stasis between all things.
The number three is a unifying force that seeks to bring about the dynamic balance necessary to Justice. This force is portrayed by the sets of ‘three’ in the image:
a) The two basins of water and the sword
b) The three points of the sword’s hilt
c) The woman’s head and her two out-stretched arms
Mountains represent the solid structure or foundation of this life, yet in this image, the moon controls its reflection. This suggests that emotions can drastically change the foundations of your life.
The sword, which stands for intellect, is cloaked with supernal light. The double-edge on the sword reminds us of the two sides of life: the seen and the unseen, and that the arm of justice can swing both ways.
This card reminds us to stand in the river of the truth of all things – what is on this earth is a reflection of the eternal truth. In order to expand judgement into justice, we must immerse ourselves in the flow of all things and equally consider what seems to be, with what is unseen.
There are three important messages in this card:
a) Understand that emotions are not the enemy, for they temper severity and open the door to insight, but they, themselves must be tempered to achieve Justice.
b) Understand that to be balanced means finding the space where light and darkness meet. Notice where the mountain ends and shadow begins, for between the two is a lush expanse of grass; the place where life begins and grows.
c) When balance is achieved and Justice is dispensed we are in alignment with our soul, much as the Lady of the Lake is depicted here. She is in alignment between emotion (the moon and water) and the intellect (the sword). Once that alignment is achieved, it is said that an individual’s journey on the astrological wheel is reversed and moves in a counter-clockwise direction.
Justice is the outpouring of the truth of opposites and is only obtainable when emotions are balanced with intellect and what is hidden, is brought to light. Justice is closely tied to the Law of Cause and Effect.
The Lady of the Lake rules the Justice Card, whose number is XI. Written as a number, eleven is 11, which metaphysically represents two columns, perhaps a doorway or gateway into a realm where intellect and emotion are perfectly balanced.

It is the courageous story of a young girl growing up in a home filled with domestic violence. She also has to endure a school and neighbourhood full of bullies. We read how she maneuvres her way through such a difficult situation. Plus, how she grows because of it, among other themes in the novel.
The desired outcome for young readers is that they will be inspired to treasure their unique differences. If they don’t fit in with the system or with those around them, then they should realise that it’s quite okay not to fit in.
